Boardwalk spoke with Spencer Issac, Mollie McGuire, and Jenna Gaudet, who created the Aboriginal Support Group at Mount Allison University in 2012, following the disappearance of Spencer’s brother, Chris Metallic. The group is seeking to create a more welcoming climate for aboriginal students at Mount Allison University, to build a community of allies, and to tackle the issue of underrepresentation of aboriginal people in the University community. They have succeeded in securing funding for a full-time staff person to work as an advisor to aboriginal students, going beyond academic advising to work on recruitment, advocacy, and personal followup with students at Mount Allison. In the years to come, they hope to secure a physical space for an Aboriginal Student Centre, that could serve as a safe space, gathering place, and resource centre for aboriginal students and community members in Sackville, New Brunswick.
