The Atlantic Canada Organic Regional Network’s third Beginning Farmer Symposium will take place next Monday, August 18 in Sackville, New Brunswick. The symposium features workshops by local farmers on topics from pasturing chickens and pest control to buying land and marketing. The event promises to be booked solid, and registration is open until this Wednesday.

Lucia Stephens, ACORN’s Grow a Farmer Program Coordinator, joined us this morning to talk about the symposium and her work supporting new farmers in the Maritimes. According to Stephens, we can expect nearly 75 per cent of Maritime farmers to retire over the next two decades, making community-building, training, and support for new farmers a structural necessity.
