Last week the provincial and national Ministers of Agriculture met in Winnipeg to discuss current challenges to the agricultural industry and the implementation of Growing Forward 2, the national policy framework on agriculture. Tantramar MLA and New Brunswick Minister of Agriculture spoke with CHMA about how the national policy framework affects farmers in the province of New Brunswick. Key topics include a transition away from “Business Risk Management” towards more proactive research and development on technological innovation (including McCain developing drones to control pesticide application), the agricultural sector’s response to changes in the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, the negotiation of free trade agreements like CETA with Europe and Japan, and measures taken to control the sharp decline in bee populations nationwide.
